Edinson Cavani is officially accused by the FA for racist behavior for a term used in his profile in the Instagram.
Uruguay, now Manchester United player, wrote “gracys negrito!”, in response he gave a fan in an Instagram story and then quickly erased the comment.
The Federation has conducted its investigation into the case in recent weeks and then officially filed the charge. Cavani will now have until 4 January to present his defense before the Federation's bodies.
The player, backed by his club, assured that it was a kind term and that in South America there is no negative meaning.
I'm completely against racism and I erased the post very quickly, as soon as it was explained it could be interpreted differently. I sincerely apologize for that,” Cavani said in a statement. But the FA has communicated that the player is accused of violating a regulation that prohibits any inappropriate “behavior” on social networks, with the difficult circumstance referring to <x4 colour> and/or race and/or the ethnicity of another person.
