Although the vaccine produced by the American firm Moderna resulted in 94.5% efficient, it remains uncertain whether the European Union will have quick access to it. Modern chief Stéphane Bancel is putting pressure on Brussels and has called for concrete steps.
The European Commission has held intensive talks last August with the US firm for the purchase of 80 million doses, but so far no contract has been signed, an Oranews broadcast. On the other hand, Moderna has reached preliminary agreements with Canada, Japan, Israel, Qatar and the United Kingdom. This does not include the commitment made to the United States last summer to give 100 million doses.
The French executive of the American laboratory, while ensuring the promised amount will not affect quality, warned there will be delays.
If the vaccine is authorized by the European Medical Agency by the end of the year and a contract has not been signed with the EU, the first doses produced in Switzerland and packed in Spain will be given to Switzerland, Japan, Israel and Canada, but not to the EU.
The longer the signing of the contract is delayed, the more vaccine doses will be sent to other countries earlier,” warned Bancel.
The European Commission defended the strategy followed so far in talks with vaccine firms.
We started negotiations with the vaccine manufacturer very early, before the summer! Talks are continuing parallel to the production of the vaccine,” spokesman Eric Mamer said on Tuesday in Brussels, without setting any deadlines for the time of signing the contract with Modernna~
