The social Twitter network, exposed to serious security threats, has employed one of the world's most famous hackers to solve problems, from engineering errors to spreading dezinforms.
The company today named Peiter Zatko, known as the hacker Mudge, in the position of chief of security and gave him broad powers to recommend changes in structure and practice.
Zatko will report to Twitter chief executive Jack Dorcey and is expected to take the lead after an analysis that will last up to 60 days, Kosovas broadcasts.
Zatko announced that he will review “information security, web site integrity, physical security, the integrity of the platform, which has begun to affect the abuse and manipulation of the platform, and the engineering part”.
The live biography of Zatko began in the 1990s when he led a confidential business for a company that had a contract with the government and was the leader of the Dead Cow Cult, a group of famous hackers for revenge of Windows to make Microsoft improve security.
During his career, Zatko worked on special Google projects and supervised the distribution of cyber security projects to the Pentagon's Advanced Project and Projects Agency (DARPA).
I don't know if anyone can fix Twitter security, but he would be at the top of my” list, said Dan Kaufman, who was Zatko's overseer at DARPA and now heads Google's advanced product division.
Twitter faces a number of security challenges. A year ago, the US government accused two computer scientists of spying on Saudi Arabia while working for Twitter in previous years, sending private information about the country's critics.
In July, a group of new hackers deceived company employees and acquired internal tools that allowed them to change the names of the then-term candidate account for president Joe Biden, the founder of Microsoft Bill Gates and Tesla leader Elon Musk.
Zatko also said he wants to improve public communication on Twitter. He praised the company's recent moves to make users comment instead of simply “weet”. The next step would be for people to understand the conversation before engaging in it, he said.
