Javier Mascherano has announced retirement from football, Insporti.com reports.
The Argentinian star ended her 17-year career as a professional footballer.
The time has come to end my career because of the things that happened to me in my last few months in my personal life, and after I've thought about it, I've decided it's fair to end today”, Mascherano said at a news conference.
The defanzied midfielder began his professional career with the Argentine giant River Plate in 2003 and spent a year in Brazil at Corinthians before passing on to Premierligë.
Mascherano spent a short period at West Ham, and then three years in Liverpool from where he joined Barcelona, the club he spent his most successful career.
After winning five titles in La League and two trophies in the Champions League among many other trophies during eight years in Camp Nou, he was lured by Hebei China Fortune.
The 36-year-old returned to Argentina in January, joining Estudiants, with whom he had contracts by the end of this season.
