Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the death of patients, aged 47 and 50, who were being treated for the disease caused by David-19. The doctor, who is now facing murder charges, has been working since February of this year at the University Hospital in the town of Essen in Nordrhein-Westfalen (NRW). The 44-year-old doctor was arrested and in custody, police said.
Both patients died on November 13th and 17th. According to the hospital, suspicion of the deaths had prompted him to suspend the doctor and immediately inform prosecutors.
According to Essen police, on one occasion the accused claimed he wanted to end the further suffering of patient COVID-19 and his relatives. Reports claimed that the two dead patients had been in very critical condition in the doctor's ward, which is believed to be the department that treats infected patients.
The doctor allegedly gave lethal injections to patients who led to their death. According to the Bild newspaper, the doctor informed the families of patients before administering injections. Prosecutors said they are currently unable to reveal further details of the incidents as the investigation continues.
However, according to a judicial decision issued last year, sick patients in Germany may seek help to end their lives. But it is unclear whether this happened in the case of both patients with COVID-19. The assisted death is especially sensitive in Germany because of the Holocaust's legacy when the Nazis killed six million Jews.
