While NASA wants to return to Monday by 2024 through the Artemis mission, it wants Nokia to create a 4G communication network for reliable and efficient communication.
To create a moon base for future Mars mission, astronauts will need a better communication network, so NASA has decided to contract several million Nokia to create a 4G communication network on the moon.
Nokia will receive NASA's blessings in terms of 14.1 million-dollar financing.
The investment was part of NASA's $370 million lunar surface research projects. Called the Typeping Point program, NASA wants to finance private companies to develop technologies that will help build an moon base before astronauts return to space rock in 2024 through the Artemis mission.
“We want to build lunar infrastructure that will enable an international partnership for the largest, wider, most diverse coalition of researchers and explorers in human history,” said the administrator of the country NASA Jim Bridenstein.
Currently, communication between the tender and the rotor is done through the first generation radio waves. Even during Apollo missions (1969-1972), NASA had to rely on radio communication using broadcasters and base stations for text transmission.
But, while NASA wants to send astronauts back to the moon and establish a base by 2028, it will take better technology for them to stay for a longer time. With communication technology 4G NASA hopes Nokia can provide an efficient and reliable platform on the moon.
“System can support lunar surface communications at larger distances at increased speeds and ensure more credibility than current standards,” NASA reports on the contract, reports United Press International (UPI).
To establish the network on the moon, Nokia will test the current 4G land communication equipment and modify systems to adapt to the lunar environment. The 4G network will be used not only by rotors but also by astronauts at the proposed lunar base.
