Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil on Tuesday voiced his support for the Azerbaijani Army's operation in the Malthia of Karabakh, a region occupied by the Armenian army, the Anadolu Agency broadcasts.
The 31-year-old German citizen of Turkish origin wrote on Twitter: “One Nation, two states”, referring to the brotherhood and strong ties between Turkey and Azerbaijan.
The “for me is important that everyone in the world should know the fact that the Karabakh Mountain region is legally and internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan, yet it is currently illegally occupied”, Ozil said in his message criticising Armenia.
“in March 2008, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution reaffirming Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and calling for the withdrawal of all Armenian forces”, he added.
Ozil said the UN decision on the dispute should be supported and recognised.
He added that current fighting on Karabakh Mountain is seriously worrying people and also endangers international peace and security.
Let's reach peace and work towards a fair future without violence. Every death on both sides is a loss for all”, he added.
Ozil helped Germany win the World Cup in 2014.
