Armenia has denied that it attacked the neighbouring country, but the leader of the Nagorno-Karabakh region has been targeted by Armenians within Azerbaijani territory.
He later said Armenia's backed forces have stopped the attacks from causing casualties among civilians, Reuters writes.
Azerbaijan has warned attacks within Armenian territory to destroy the military checkpoints from which missiles are being launched to the Asser cities.
Why are Armenia and Azerbaijan fighting?
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been part of the Soviet Union until its breakup in 1991.
For four decades, these two small states are in unresolved conflict for the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is recognised by the international community as Azerbaijan's territory but controlled by Armenians.
Before this year, tensions had also increased in 2016, when forces from both countries had clashed for four days.
The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSBE) has long tried to find a solution to the dispute by forming the Minsk Group, composed of French, Russian and American diplomats, with the aim of achieving a lasting ceasefire.
