General Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda was chained to Los Angeles Airport, the country's foreign minister has announced through a tweet.
The Mexican government has confirmed to the BBC that he was arrested with an arrest warrant issued by the US DEA, broadcasting Periscope.
The foreign minister said he expected to be informed of the charges against General Cienfuegos in the coming hours.
No additional information was provided.
General Cienfuegos, 72, served as minister from 2012 to 2018 under President Enrice Pena Nieto.
