Six people are accused of tax evasion and counterfeiting documents in the period between November 2006 and September 2015, when the scandal first hit the German car giant.
The suspects are said to be “primarily responsible for the fraud of VW customers and regulators with software assistance designed to test environmental emissions in oil cars, according to the statement.
Martin Wintercorn, former president of the Volkswagen Group, who is not exposed by the findings, has also been charged with fraud by Brownschweig.
The town is located in the state of Down Below Saxonia, where the central headquarters of the Volkswagen brand is located.
