Unlike France of President Macron, Germany of Chancellor Merkel wants the opening of negotiations for membership in the European Union of Albania and Northern Macedonia. Regarding such a topic, the German prime minister has spoken Thursday at the meeting he had with Croatian counterpart Andrey Plenkovic, as Croatia will now lead the EU presidency by June.
Merkel has not forgotten to mention the Republic of Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, while talking about the enlargement process.
I believe that Albania has fulfilled most of the criteria we have requested as a country, especially in terms of the vetoing and restructuring process of courts, and now is the time for opening negotiations. Our parliament has also expressed an additional number of conditions. A major breakthrough was made in northern Macedonia when the name issue was resolved. I believe that Albania and Northern Macedonia are in the same group. We also have Serbia-Montenegro, Albania and Northern Macedonia, and of course we have Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo, which is a different situation”, Chancellor Merkel said at the media conference after meeting with Plenkovic.
The German Chancellor has said that at the Council meeting in December they have failed to reach an agreement with Macro, meanwhile, she has added that she will see if anything can be done at the Council meeting in March.
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic has also spoken about the process of dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, and also the EU High Representative Josep Borelli's request that negotiations resume before the Zagreb Summit.
He has said that no details have yet been made as to the issue of negotiations, but has said that at the Zagreb Summit, which will be held on May 5th, all issues that have political character and are open and has pointed out that he expects progress for the Western Balkans to be made.
We have not entered into details about reports between Kosovo and Serbia. We have talked about all states, and we also aim to make progress in Zagreb. A very important aspect that Croatia puts above all, is that the summit has political character and we want to open all the issues that are on the table and in open debate”, Plenkovic has said.
The challenge in restarting dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia has caused political situation in Kosovo, where official Pristina continues to be without new institutions since July 2019, when Ramush Haradinaj has said he is stepping down from the prime minister's post. Meanwhile, it has been more than 3 months since holding new elections, and political parties are failing to find consensus on reaching a coalition for co-governance.
