Spectacular images of Shanghai were published in world media through China's state media. But the people who were in the New Year's event said they saw nothing.
The company behind the show confirmed to the BBC that images around the world were made on December 28th.
The view shows 2,000 feet flying from Shanghai's Pudong district, then creating forms of fireworks, an animated figure of a man running, a 2020 count and Chinese figures in the sky.
But as reported, people who were looking up at the sky in Pudong that night saw nothing. “No drop, nothing”
The company's manager, Yihang Bailu, said these images were prepared by Shanghai's local television to ensure the effect of live transmission.
Also, local authorities were told that there would be no New Year's celebration activity this year, Periscope follows.
Comments on the YouTube channel of China's news agency said it didn't matter and that it was still a magnificent show.
Others said it was wise to prevent injuries or the large crowd. Shanghai has kept the New Year's events silent since 2014, when people began to leave and the crowd printed 40 people who remained dead.
