They made those comments in Belgrade, after meeting with Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq.
The two senators said the dialogue process “would require a lot of compromises and sacrifices from both sides”, but added that once the agreement is reached, “potentials and benefits for the two countries would be bigger than the one that could be lost in negotiations”.
Johnson, Republican, said that “America is a friend of the Serbian people” and that “wants to do everything possible to support dialogue and the process, in which both people have to give something and get something”.
The Democrat Murphy said he hopes that after the elections in Kosovo, even authorities in Pristina will take the necessary steps for continued dialogue.
He stressed that support for the Serbia-Kosovo dialogue is an issue for which both Democrats and Republicans in the US agree.
Dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia has been suspended since Kosovo has taxed products imported from Serbia in November last year.
Vuciq told the American senators that “Belgrade expects the removal of tax” and that it wants “the achievement of a compromise agreement”.
But, Vuciq added, this resolution “cannot be the fulfillment of the goals of one side of”, while the Serbian side won nothing.
Serbia can discuss anything only if there are compromise solutions. If there is no compromise solution, we cannot recognise Kosovo's independence. And there's no great philosopher” here, Vuciq said.
The improvement of relations between Serbs and Albanians and the establishment of lasting peace would be useful for Serbs and Albanians, as well as for all people living in the region”, Vuciq added.
American senators stayed in Pristina this week.
