Women who receive paracetamol while pregnant risk having behavioral problems, one study says.
Scientists found a link between pregnant mothers who use the sedative and their hyperactive and emotional problems.
Paracetamoli is the world's most popular sedative, and it is the only one considered safe to take on during pregnancy. But there are research that links the drinking of it to asthma, infertility, and autism.
In the latest research, conducted by the University of Bristol, scientists examined data from 14,000 children between six months and 11.
Using Bristol's questionnaire and school information from the study Children of the 1990s, researchers analyzed the children's memory results, IQ, temperamental and behavioral tests. This was compared to the data on how often their mothers had received paracetamol between 18 and 32 weeks of pregnancy.
The study found a significant link between taking paracetamol and behavioral problems among children, including hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder.
The effects were stronger when the children were three years old.
The boys seemed to be more sensitive than girls to the possible effects of the drug, said the journal Paddy and Perinatal Epidemiology.
The study warned pregnant women to use only the lowest possible dose of paracetamol for as little time as possible.
More research is needed to determine the cause. So far paracetamoli remains certain for use in treating soft to moderate pain in women during pregnancy and breast care.
