The quake's epicentre has been in the Marmara Sea, with a depth of 2km and 66km west of Istanbul.
Volunteers have felt strong in several cities, causing panic among residents. Many quickly flocked to the streets and squares for fear of the collapse of buildings.
So far, no dead persons reported.
