We tend to be aware of the emotional slavery we submit to only when our heart is broken. When a relationship makes us suffer because it makes us slaves, restricting our emotional freedom, or because something inside us is broken, we should say goodbye.
In such situations, we feel that a wave of suffering and pain overtakes us, preventing us from breathing. It's called the “emotional flood”, and its main ingredient is addiction. Sometimes, though, it is time to give up what binds us to a person or a situation because your emotional slavery is overwhelming. It is then that we feel unable to do anything without being accompanied by that person or someone who is capable of leading us.

Dependence is what makes us slaves, especially when our self - esteem depends on something or someone. The need for praise, love, or attention from someone causes us to stop being masters of our fate.
