Michael Gebru, 41, made frequent trips between Toronto and East Africa, hoping to use his wealth to make a positive change in his homeland, said his cousin Sosuna Assefaw, for CBC News, Fox News.
Recently he traveled to East Africa with plans to visit his adult country, she said.
The family heard he was killed Saturday, but accused local authorities of providing little information.
Gebru won the lottery in 2017 after being fired at a assembly factory, the report said. He thought he only won about $14 when he first checked his ticket.
I always said that if I won the lottery, I would help people in need,” he told CBC News at the time.
According to his cousin, Gebr endured to the end of those words. “Returning home, he just wanted to do more for our country,” said Assefaw.
