Lagarde's appointment will be officially confirmed by EU leaders at their upcoming summit, October 17th-18th.
Lagarde was appointed in July to succeed the post of BEC chief Mario Draghi, as part of a package of high EU appointments, the European Parliament reports.
She'll be the first woman to take the post.
The ECB's main task is to preserve price stability in the eurozone.
For this aim, it seeks to preserve inflation at less than 2%. Inflation has been dropping significantly for several months.
