The childhood asthma is the most serious chronic disease among children, according to the World Health Organization. A new report says that traffic pollution is a major cause of disease. Kevin Enochs of the Voice of America brings more details.
Traffic pollution is known to be a major contributor to climate change, but new research suggests it is also a major factor of health problems worldwide. Susan Annenberg is with the Milken Institute for Public Health.
Recent estimates indicate that air pollution is actually a major factor in global health risk, greater than any environmental cause that causes disease. ”
According to the World Health Organization, air pollution causes some 3.7 million premature deaths annually.
But this new study by George Washington University in the U.S. capital shows a specific pollutation, nitrogen dioxide, NO2, from car - releasing pollution as the main cause of childhood asthma in many cities of the world.
“The version of nitrogen dioxide has a huge impact on many children worldwide diagnosed with asthma. The biggest impacts have been seen in cities where almost 50 per cent of new cases
Astemma among children in several cities worldwide is attributed to pollution by nitrogen dioxide”Says Susan Annenberg with the Milken Institute for Public Health.
While an extremely disturbing element from the study is that cities where asthma is spreading have nitrogen dioxide levels within the borders considered safe by the World Health Organization.
“One of the most surprising findings is that currently 90 percent of the asthma cases caused by nitrogen dioxide occurred in areas that meet the World Federation guidelines for average annual pollution”, Says Ploy Pattanun Acculwissu, of the Milken Institute for Public Health.
Most of the cities with high levels of car pollution are in countries like China, India and the United States. The solution, researchers say, is the continuation of the fight against gases phenomenon that
They create greenhouse phenomena and global excitement because both problems are closely related.
“One of the findings is that cities that had high levels of nitrog dioxide also had high levels of greenhouse gases. One thing that can be done is avoid burning fossil fuels and reducing by any means”, Says Mrs. Annenberg.
Researchers say they hope to do further research to understand which specific chemicals from car pollution cause asthma in order to handle these specific sources of pollution. (VOA)
