The United States is considering the withdrawal of several American troops deployed in Germany, with Poland considered their new destination.
That was announced by the American Ambassador to Germany. The troop withdrawal threat comes amid differences between Berlin and Washington over Germany's contribution to Natto and the latest rift caused by Germany's refusal to participate in a US-led naval mission to the Persian Gulf.
It's actually offensive to think that American taxpayers should continue to pay to have 50,000 Americans in Germany, while the Germans themselves spend any excess on domestic programmes”, American Ambassador Richard Green said.
US President Ddonald Trump, meanwhile, has cited the possibility of moving some American troops from Germany to Poland, even in talks with Polish President Andrze Duda to Washington in June.
Germany is the European country where most American troops are deployed, with 35 thousand soldiers deployed together there alongside 17 thousand civilian Americans employed by the US Army.
