The map prepared by the World Resources Institute estimates the extent of the risk of water shortages, droughts and floods of rivers.
Agriculture, industry and municipalities absorb 80% of the groundwater on average in one year in the 17 states involved in the study, mainly in the Middle East and North Africa.
These countries are Qatar, Israel, Lebanon, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Eritrea, United Arab Emirates, San Marino, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Oman, Botswana and India, the second most populated country in the world.
