An unknown organ that feels dangerous stimulants from the environment may be responsible for certain types of pain, explained scientists who discovered the new organ under the skin surface.
The retina feels pressure, stabs, and other mechanical causes of pain from the environment, scientists from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden have discovered.
Made up of a network of so - called Schwann cells placed near the nerves and previously out of touch with the discovery of pain, the new organ is under the skin, and thin nerve fibers are spread out in the surface skin.
Swedish experts, whose research was published in Science magazine, named the newly discovered body NGNC.
It forms a very complex network of nearby nerve cells throughout the body, so scientists think it should be called an organ.
Swedish experts hope that their study will lead to a better understanding of the pain mechanism and what kind of pain activates certain cells.
They also hope the discovery will lead to new types of chronic pain treatment a situation that afflicts many people, and for which medicine has little knowledge.
