A 21-year-old white man was arrested at the Walmart store, where Saturday's attack was carried out in the town of El Paso, near the US-Mexic border.
In a document, which appears to have been posted shortly before the attack and believed to have been written by that man, nationalist and racist white views are expressed. This is where the attack was named an answer to the “the Spanish invasion of Texas”.
The suspect lived in Allen, in the Dallas area, about 1,046km east of El Paso, according to police, who are still interviewing him.

Officials have not offered an exact motive for the attack, which also left 26 injured, but El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen said investigators were looking into a document that could show a possible “connection to a hate crime”.
He seemed to be referring to a text posted in 8chan, an online message board often used from the extreme right, which describes a “cultural and ethnic replacement brought about by an invasion”, alluding to hispanic people in the US.
The four-page document, reportedly posted about 20 minutes before police received the first emergency call, also expresses support for the armed person who killed 51 people in Christchurch, New Zealand, in March.
