A diet rich in plant - based foods translates into fewer heart problems in a new study.
In the study, researchers analyzed data collected by over 10,000 middle - aged people in the United States who were followed from 1987 to 2016. No one had heart disease at the start of the study.
The eating habits of participants were analyzed, and their eating patterns were grouped according to the proportion of plant - based foods they ate, as opposed to the proportion of animal - based foods.

Compared to those who ate mainly animal-based foods, those who ate mostly plant-based foods had a risk: 16% lower heart attack, stroke, heart failure and other heart problems; a 32% lower risk of death from heart disease; and a 25% lower risk of death from any cause during the study period.
The study was published online on August 7th in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
“While you do not need to give up foods derived from animals completely, our study suggests that eating a larger portion of plant-based foods and a smaller portion of animal-based foods can help reduce your risk of having a heart attack, stroke or other type of cardiovascular disease, “researcher Casey Rebholz.
The study is one of the first to examine the proportion of dietary patterns based on plants toward animals in the general population, according to Rebholz.
