Greek firefighters are still struggling today to extinguish the fires that have swept one of the best stored sites on Eube Island, where authorities express regret for a major ecological disaster.
The fire, which has included a 12km front, has not caused casualties but has brought the evacuation of four villages on Eube Island, the second largest Greek island after Crete, located 100km northeast of Athens.
“This is a major ecological disaster in a forest of unique pines, which had remained intact until this day”, said the outgoing regional governor, Costas Bakoyannis. The fire, announced about 3: 00 a.m., spread rapidly because of strong winds, dense vegetation, and the drought of the island.
It has caused the evacuation of the villages of Kontodespot, Macrymira, Stavros and Platanas, in the centre of the island and threatened the town of Psachna at night”, authorities declared. “From Psachna to Contodespoti and Makryylley, everything has been burned. We've had the luck of not being registered victims”, Thanassis Karakatzas, a civil defense official for ANA news agency, stressed.
