Protected sex? Still looks like utopia. In fact, there are over a million cases of sexually transmitted (SST) in the world every day. According to new research by the World Health Organization, the most common infections are four: chlamydia, gonorrhea, trimonosis, and syphilis.

The latest data

In detail, according to WHO's report, in 2016 there were 127 million new cases of chlamia, 87 million gonorrhea, 6.3 million cases of syphilis and 156 million trimonosis. On average, 1 person in 25 has at least one of these sexually transmitted infections and in some cases more than one. Compared to the previous poll, dating back to 2012, no progress has been achieved. The percentage, in fact, remained almost the same.

Sexual infections are very secretive. In fact, if they are not identified with time and are not properly treated, they can cause significant consequences, such as neurological and cardiovascular diseases, infertility, ectopic pregnancy, perinatal mortality and increased HIV risk. Therefore, every effort must be made to increase awareness of the matter. “These infections are everywhere and are more widespread than believed, but there is little attention and stigma is still very strong. The SS should be regarded in the same way as all other infections. We need awareness campaigns to encourage citizens to do examination, spread information on the dangers of these infections and the rules of prevention through the media, but also at school and within families”, confirms Theodore Wi, SST expert in WHO.

How to Protect Yourself?

First of all, avoid vulnerable relationships. It is also important not to exchange towels and respect careful personal hygiene. And in case of suspicious symptoms, seek medical advice without embarrassment.
