Most women say they would use cannabis to treat menstrual pain and other kinds of gynecological pain, a new survey shows.
Researchers at the University of Health and Science in Oregon interviewed more than 1,000 women throughout the United States.
Sixty percent had used cannabis, mainly to treat pain, depression, and anxiety.
Moreover, those who had not used this drug were not against its use.
Indeed, almost two thirds of women who have never used cannabis (63 %) said that they would take drugs in an effort to ease their pain during periods.
These findings come as countries throughout the United States have been thinking about whether in cases of women with doublerhea (heavy menstrual pain) doctors add marijuana as medicine.
The cannabis products are currently being used by women as medical tools. Most women would consider using cannabis to deal with gynaecological problems:, said lead author Katie Alton.
Eighty percent of women experience severe periods of pain in the lower part of their abdomen, while some suffer pain in thighs, backs, or chest.
One in 10 women experiences pain as intense as a heart attack.
And yet, there is no treatment, besides taking ibuprofen, which, for some, can mean six pills a day, for a week, every month.
Regular taking of Tylenol or Advil can exacerbate the intestines, exacerbating the breathing and worsening pain of period.
While the United States is trying to avoid pills that calm chronic pain, the land is fertile for other options -- and the flourishing cannabis industry has not lost time.
However, no study so far has shown that cannabis really works and has a good effect. But while doctors and lawmakers settle these issues, it seems that women do not expect after they take cannabis themselves for pain relief.
Doctors say clinical studies are needed, but they do not deny that marijuana can be healing for many menstrual pains.
