One quarter of American adults are thought to have a problem swallowing.
Researchers hope that new knowledge will help treat patients with these problems.
A recent study noted changes in the ability to eat food.
Researchers hope the findings will help with expert training projects that can help prevent the problem of swallowing endangered adults, Kosovo Press broadcasts.
The study included 31 adults, aged 62 to 91, without eating problems, and 33 healthy young people aged 18 to 28.
The two groups were subjected to an X-ray test that revealed the mechanism of their swallowing of food. The test showed how long the throat was closed during the swallowing, or how long it had to close airway during the swallowing to prevent food from escaping into the lungs.
In the elderly, this problem begins relatively late. This means that food reaches the throat later, and should last longer to prevent food from reaching the lungs through the air.
This brings the elderly to a higher risk of getting food into the lungs, which increases the risk of lung inflammation because of lung food, which could lead to death, researchers say.
Although more common among older people, eating problems can happen among young people.
About half the patients with a diagnosis dissphagia in America die within a year of this diagnosis, according to researchers. Treatments include rehabilitation therapies such as swallowing exercises and training force.
The findings have recently been presented at the Association for the Research of Disfagia in Baltimore- USA.
