Nearly two decades later, the singer is facing two separate indictments in Illinois and New York.
The charges issued Friday allegedly were that 52-year-olds recruited women for sex, persuaded people to keep secret from having sex with teenage girls and that they paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy videocassettes.
Kelly was arrested in Chicago on Thursday night and is expected to remain in custody at least by Tuesday.
He appeared before the court on Friday in the orange prison suit.
Kelly's lawyer said his client should be released on bail on the charges he faces in Illinois and New York.
“It certainly poses no danger to escape and is no danger to anyone above all,”- Steve Greenberg told reporters outside the courtroom.
In an indictment of 13 charges issued against the singer Friday Kelly was accused of filming himself committing relations with at least 4 girls under the age of 18 starting in 1998.
A few years later, he realized that some of these videos were missing from his collection and started paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to get them back.
When they took the videos, they say that Kelly and his associates instructed people to run polygraph tests to make sure that they had returned all copies of the videos.
Prosecutors claim that Kelly and his former manager, Pigell McDavid, facilitated a trip abroad in 2002 for a girl and her parents not to be found by law enforcement, writes Oranews, broadcasts the Kosovo Clan. They even gave gifts, including a GMC Yukon Denali SUV, as well as money for more than a decade to lie to investigators and hide the girl's sexual relationship with Kelly.
