Iranian officials said the suspects had collected information on important sectors, including in the areas of military and nuclear activity.
American President Donald Trump has dismissed claims saying the report is completely false.
Tensions have escalated in recent weeks between Washington and Tehran. President Trump last year abandoned the international nuclear agreement with Iran and reversed economic sanctions on the Islamic country.
Iran already made Monday's announcement to the state media and said the spies were arrested before March 2019. On Friday, Iran confiscated a British flag tank in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Last month, Iran also dropped an American monitoring threat over the strait, saying it had violated Iranian airspace.
But the American Army said the fears were over international waters and condemned the unprotested attack. The US has accused Iran of two separate attacks on oil tankers in Oman Bay in May and June, charges the teheran has denied. /Tch
