The 63-year-old Socialist, a former journalist from Florence, has been a deputy in the European Parliament for a decade.
He won 345 votes in the second round of voting, an absolute majority of votes cast by European lawmakers in Strasbourg.
Sassol will replace Antonio Tayan as president of the European Parliament.
After several days of intensive negotiations, EU leaders, 2 July, appointed the new leaders of the main EU institutions./rel. /
