Also listed among them is Lake Ohrid, accepted in U NESTO on July 5, 2019.
In the writing of Cecilia Rodriguez Lake Ohrid, divided between Albania and Northern Macedonia, it is known for three prehistoric settlements.
” Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid region, in Albania and North Macedonia: The part of Lake Ohrid, located in northern Macedonia and in its remote area, including the city of Ohrid, is originally included in the World Heritage List in 1979.
It is now lying on the northwest part of Lake Ohrid, Lini's tiny Peninsula and the strip of land along the coast linking the peninsula with the Macedonian border.
The peninsula is home to the ruins of an early Christian church founded in the middle of the 6th century. In shallow waters off the lake's shores, three countries have witnessed the presence of prehistoric dwellings.
The lake provides shelters for numerous wandering species of wildlife and freshwater flora dating from the Terciare Period (66 million to 2,58 million years ago).
43rd session U n NESCO also approved Baku's Declaration to highlight the need to boost efforts to preserve and protect effectively the monuments included in the World Heritage List and manage them.
It expressed concern about the destruction of natural and cultural monuments in areas of armed conflict, the conduct of illegal archaeological excavations, illegal transport of cultural property, and illegal exploitation of cultural resources.
Specification U n NESTO means that selected countries can now enjoy better financing and protection”, Rodriguez concludes.
