Scientists at the National Institute of Health analyzed health and living data for 43,722 women from 35 to 74 who registered in a major study about risk factors for breast cancer and other diseases. While women using a small night light were found to maintain their weight, those who drowned in light or burning TV had 17 percent more likely to have gained 11 pounds [11 kg] over the course of the five - year period. The results of the study were recently published at JAMA Internal Medicine.

Scientists speculated that the melatonine of the sleep hormone was crushed when artificial television light is turned off. Other factors may have played a part in the results of weight gain.
“Although poor sleep itself is linked to weight gain, it does not explain the links between exposure to artificial light during sleep and weight”, said current author Dale Sandler, chief of the Epidemiology branch at the National Environment Institute (NIEHS), in a press release.
The unhealthy diet of calories and the ways they sleep have been one of the most common factors mentioned in explaining the steady growth of the weight”, notes lead author Yong-Moon (Mark) Park. “This study highlights the importance of artificial light at night and gives women who are accustomed to sleeping with TV on a way to improve their health. ”
