According to the report on air pollution, lack of renewable energy sources has been identified as the main cause of air pollution in the Balkans, as the region “undeveloped and politically fragile” still relies on burning coal for energy production.
The AP points out that the United Nations Environment Programme report, published today, is based on data from 18 cities and is prepared in co-ordination with the World Health Organization and the institutions for air quality assessment.
The report says people in the region “are exposed to one of the biggest concentrations of air pollution in Europe, which is up to five times higher than national and EU guidelines”.
