The former commander made these comments after meeting Angela Merkel in Berlin.
“Ukrainian is already part of the European family. Ukraine would like European integration, which is the greatest desire of our people”, Zelensky said.
However, we must ensure convincing results to become part of the common economic, legal, customs and digital zone of the EU”, he stressed.
Ukraine is fighting Russian separatists east of the country, while the Crime Peninsula has already been annexed by Russia.
Russia has often warned NATO and the EU are not approaching its borders. Ukraine's possible EU and NATO membership would bring blocks to physical borders with Russia.
