According to a report by the renowned German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung on Friday (07.06) German Chancellor Angela Merkel has made a clear rejection of the European Commission's desire for quick opening of membership negotiations with Albania and Northern Macedonia. She said that at a session of the Bundestag Parliamentary Commission for Europe, according to “information. Süddeutsche Zeitung” Merkel has made it clear that a decision to that effect is expected earlier in October.
With this Chancellor clearly emerges against the coalition partner, the Social Democrat Party, the SPD, which supports the vote for opening negotiations in the EU Council on June 18th. German Minister of State for Europe in the Foreign Ministry Michael Roth (SPD) is one of the German politicians who has been firmly committed to opening negotiations with the two Balkan countries in recent weeks. He has stressed in various interviews that Albania's commitment to reform should be assessed.
Disagreement of positions within the German ruling coalition was noted openly following the European Commission's progress report in late May. The EC called for the quick opening of negotiations with both Albania and Northern Macedonia. But CDU/ CSU is also reserved this year, it needs careful analysis of the report. The German MP of the CDU, and the chairman of the parliamentary group for the Western Balkans in Bundestag, Johann Wadepuhl, has said the CDU/ The CSU will have to carefully review progress reports on Albania and North Macedonia.
This is the only way we can make a responsible decision on whether the start of negotiations for membership of these two countries in the EU has truly been met, Wadephul said in a statement issued shortly after the release of EC progress-report in late May. For Wadefhul, Albania has not met any of the conditions set out at the Council of Foreign Ministers, dated 28 June 2018.
Due to the CDU Work Calendar The CSU is not believed to be considered before autumn. / DW
