His inauguration ceremony comes just days after the coalition in Ukraine has dissolved after Zelensky announced he intends to organise early elections.
Under the Ukrainian constitution, parliament has 30 days to form the new coalition government, while the president has no right to launch the early elections process during that time.
During his campaign, Zelensky promised to fight corruption, as well as end the conflict between pro-Russian separatists and government forces east of Ukraine. As a result of this conflict, which began in 2014, some 13,000 people have died.
