Letter to the President of the Mix Commission
Athens, May 13, 1924.
After the exhibition that we had the honor of doing in Preveza, we are rushing to present to the High Commission the following arguments, which support the Albanian race of Chameria, which means Margaritium, Gumenica and Fulet, for which we are their representatives and where no Muslim, in our opinion, should be subject to exchange.
Chamber Muslims, including those of Paramith, are Albanians known as all historians, historically, and especially those of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
These historians and travelers are English, French, and Greek; it will be sufficient to quote Leake, Powqueville, Gervinus, Finlay, Aravantino. All have said that Chamat, like the Suliot, are Albanians from race, language and customs. There are still today, in the village of Gardhioi, a neighbourhood called Copolas, all Muslims who are cousins of the famous suliot Javela hero.
In fact, what distinguishes one race from another, what testifies to its being Albanian, their language, their spoken Albanian language, their customs, which completely differ from those of Turks, their customs and household traditions, their weddings, funerals, the birth of a child, their dances, their songs, etc.
Chamash's costume is very characteristic; it has been created since the Pellazza era and is common to all Albanians, for chams as well as for others. As for those who argue that Chamat came from Damascus (Chem en lyre), these are dishonest words of people who are ignorant in history and who act for personal interests. Some <x0horhary” also claimed we were Turks, because they wanted to go to Anatolia, hoping, so to find Khalif there.
We would be extremely grateful if a decision was made in our favor, decreeing us out of exchange, and if measures are made to remove restrictions on the Albanian Muslim element, and thus, to be free to enjoy our properties, our freedom, our civil rights, in order to return to a normal state, something after which we are looking for over 15 months.
We beg you, sir. President, to be convinced of our deepest respect. ”
