The Israeli leader's talks with former Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman did not make progress. Mr. Lieberman's party has five seats in the 120-member parliament that Mr. Netanyah needed to take control of the majority.
Mr. Netanyahu refused to accept Mr. Lieberman's request that the ultra-orthodox Jews be part of the mandatory military service like all other Jews, and be no exception to them in the past, VoA reports.
Everything is as it was”, Mr. Lieberman said.
Israeli lawmakers decided the distribution of parliament, paving the way for new elections only weeks after April's early elections appeared to give Mr. Netanyyahu good opportunities to form a new government, becoming prime minister for the fifth time and the leader who has long held the post.
Netanyahu and Lieberman have been allies and often rivals over the years.
Elections are expected to be held in September.
