Even soft or moderate drinking increases blood pressure and the chances of developing strokes, according to a large genetic study being conducted in The Lancet.
This research conflicts with previous studies that one or two drinks a day can be protective.
British and Chinese scholars analyzed 500,000 Chinese people for ten years.
They say the findings are relevant to all populations and better trials on the direct effects of alcohol.
Experts said people should limit alcohol consumption.
It is already known that heavy drinking is harmful to health and increases the risk of assault on the brain, but some studies have suggested that small drinks may be good for health, while others show that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
