One in five people in the world dies from bad diets, experts say, warning that excessive sugar, salt, and meat consumption is killing millions each year. The United Nations estimates that nearly one billion people in the world are malnourished, while another two billion are overweight.
But the latest study published in the medical magazine “The Lancet” shows that in almost 195 countries surveyed, people eat many of the wrong food types and consume low levels of healthy products.
According to the study, the most dangerous diets are the ones that contain lots of salt, few cereals, and few vegetables.
Small quantities of nuts, seeds, vegetables, sea products, and fibers are other large killers, the study says.
“Dieta is one of the world's dominant health leaders”, said study author Christopher Murray, director of the Institute for Measure and Health Education at the University of Washington.
The study examined the trend of consumption and disease between 1990-2017.
