Japanese butterfly Hayabusa 2 launched an explosive device at the Ryuga asteroid, writes BBC.
It's a major scientific research, as scientists believe asteroids will help better understand how planet Earth and other planets are formed in the early solar system.
Ryugu belongs to a particularly primitive type of cosmic rock, known as asteroid C. This is a relic that has remained from the early days of our solar system, and under its surface it has preserved conditions and chemical processes of some 4.5 billion years ago.
Scientists hope that they will soon receive a fresh sample from that ancient period
