Public health experts at the University of Tokyo found that the lack of sexual experience was on the rise in the country, with the percentage of women aged 18-39 who had never had sex in 24.6% in 2015 since 21.7% in 1992.
The change was greater for males of the same age, with 25.8% virgins in 2015, up from 20% in 1992.
The lack of sexual experience has become a national concern in Japan, but previous reports have not reviewed the trend between different age groups and socioeconomic backgrounds”, said Peter Weda, a public health researcher at the University of Tokyo and an author of the study.
By comparison, polls from Great Britain, the United States and Australia suggest that the rate of heterosexual inexperienced is between 1% and 5% of adults in or about 30.
The authors said that while a growing number of Japanese adults were sexually inexperienced, their study was the first to address the issue using national representative data.
Researchers based their appreciation throughout the country on data in seven national fertility polls conducted over three decades. Each received the answers of 11,553 and 17,859 adults 18 to 39.
Japan can bring a global trend toward a lack of sexual experience among couples, suggesting a global change in attitudes on sex.
