The youngest age allowed for gun maintenance in New Zealand is age 16 years old for small arms, while 18 years old for long arms. In other words, any person who has reached this age and who is physically and mentally healthy can possess a weapon.
All men who carry weapons must be equipped with permission, but they are not obliged to register their weapons. New Zealand is among the few countries that allow that. Thus, a person with a permit for a gun can practically carry many other weapons.
To obtain access to weapons, applicants submit to a criminal background and health history. These include mental health, addiction to various substances, and domestic violence. When a person is equipped with permission, he or she has the right to buy an unlimited number of weapons.
Because of this rule, police say the exact number of weapons is unknown. However, 246 thousand active gun permits have been issued in New Zealand until June 2018.
During 2017, this country has applied 43 thousand 509 who get gun permits, and alone. 188 People have been denied this request.
