Facebook has stored hundreds of millions of user passwords in simple files, accepted the social network.
The error was discovered on a blog detailing how passwords were stored in a readable format within the internal data storage systems.
Pedro Canahati, Facebook's deputy president of engineering, security and privacy, said the passwords were visible to Facebook employees, but claimed there was no evidence that someone had abused them.
“We will report hundreds of millions of Facebook users, tens of millions of other Facebook users and tens of thousands of Instagram” users, he wrote.
“There is nothing more important for us than protecting people's information and we will continue to make improvements as part of our continued security efforts on Facebook”, Canahi added.
