At a press conference in Brussels, Tusk said there is a threat to attacks similar to public opinion manipulation campaigns, which, according to him, have taken place in efforts to influence the referendum on Britain's exit from the European Union in 2016.
There are anti-European foreign forces trying, open or secret, to introduce the democratic elections of Europeans, as was the case with Brex and several election campaigns across Europe. And as may be the case, again in May... ”, said Tusk.
Tusk did not specifically mention Russia, but the British government has said Russia has made efforts to manipulate the Brex vote:
“Do not allow political parties, which are founded by hostile external forces, to decide on key EU priorities and the leadership of European institutions”.
France and Germany have also said Russia has made efforts to influence their elections. Opinion polls show that Eurosceptics people will significantly advance in the European Parliament elections, but central political groups, according to them, will most likely continue to guard the majority, despite growing signs of fragmentation.
