Flowers, candy, red hearts and romance. This is all Valentine's Day, right? Well, maybe not.
The origin of this festival for expressing love is not romantic at all. Priest Frank O'Gara from Ireland has told the true story of man after this holiday Valentine's Day.
He was a Roman priest during the time when Emperor Claudius had persecuted churches at that particular time. He had also given an order prohibiting marriage to young people”, relates O'Gara.
This was based on the hypothesis that unwed soldiers fought better than married men because these two are more afraid of what could happen to their wives or family if they died.
We should remember that Valentine was in a very tolerant society. Polygamy would have been far more popular than just a male and a woman living together. And yet some of them were seduced by the Christian faith. But normally, the church felt that marriage is very sacred between a male and a woman and that this should be encouraged. So the idea of encouraging them to marry within the Christian church had been Valentine's, and he had married them secretly because of the order of Emperor”, explains priest OʹGara.
Valentine had eventually been captured, imprisoned, and tortured for performing wedding ceremonies against Emperor Claudius's order.
In 269 after Christ's death, Valentin was sentenced to a three-part execution involving beating, throwing stones and finally removing his head only because of his pro-Christian marriage stance.
History also says that the last words Valentin had written had been for a girl where at the end of the letter it was: “from your Valentine” expression used today.
Valentine's example is that at times a time in life comes when you should risk your life for what you believe. Valentine is known as the patron saint of lovers.
