Deep mud can be a warning sign of cardiovascular disease, researchers say.
A study presented at the European Conference of Cardiology in Munich revealed that people with more wrinkles for their age had a greater risk of dying of this disease.
Researchers said that wrinkles can be linked to arteriosclerosis, the hardening of arteries because of the creation of plaques. Arteriosclerosis is a major contributor to heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems.
Changes in collagen protein, which gives hair, skin, and fingernails structure and oxidative stress appear to play a role in both atherosclerosis and wrinkles.
The study suggested that small blood vessels in the forehead may be more sensitive to the creation of the plaque, which means that wrinkles may be a sign of aging.
The authors found that the most wrinkled people had a slightly higher risk of death than did humans without wrinkles.
Previous studies have analyzed various visible signs of aging to see if they warn cardiovascular diseases, where a link has been discovered to male hair loss, earlobe wrinkles, and high risk of heart disease.
