Hungarian women who have 4 children will be permanently exempt from income taxes. The new plan, announced by Prime Minister Victor Orban, aims at increasing fertility in Hungary.
This, according to populist leaders, is a way to protect the future of the country without depending on immigration.
We are living in a time where fewer and fewer children are born in Europe. For the West, the answer is immigration. But we don't need numbers, we need Hungarian children”, Orban said.
The Hungarian population has contracted by 32,000 people annually, and women are giving birth to fewer children than the European Union average.
As part of these measures, young couples will provide loans of up to $36,000, considered canceled if three children are made.
France is the country with the highest birth rate, with 1.96, while Spain is named the lowest-born country in the European Union. While Victor Orban was giving his speech on the nation's situation, Budapest was buzzing with protests against its ruling policies. At least 2 thousand people gathered in front of the prime minister's office, while others blocked one of the main bridges over the Danube River.
