The pregnancy is a very special time of life. Every mother tries to protect her children from all dangers. That's why women are willing to believe everything they hear, even the craziest superstitions.
Many are completely false, but some have logical grounds.
Brighton Side tells us some of the best-known superstitions and is ready to tell us where they came from:
Mothers should not eat fish because a baby cannot talk for a long time
Almost all fish, especially river fish, can contain parasites that are dangerous to humans. The effects can be on a child's slow communication. However, if the fish is cooked at a high temperature, you can eat it without worrying about it.
You can't walk under a ladder, the child will be weak
This superstition has spread throughout Western Europe. A ladder that rests on a wall makes a triangle that is a symbol of the Holy Trinity. It is believed that a woman crossing the triangle will break the trinity and have problems with her child. One more logical reason to stay away from the stairs is to keep a woman safe in case she falls down. In the Middle Ages, this was probably an ordinary superstition.
You can't go to the cemetery, it's a bummer
Many Arab countries, as well as Israel, Eastern Europe, and the Philippines, follow this superstition. It is believed that the child can be called by the souls of their ancestors or that the child will have a bad temper and will cry a lot. The basis for this irrational superstition may be from certain religious restrictions or to keep a pregnant woman from stress.
You have to eat hot food so your child doesn't have hair
People in Thailand and some other countries in Southeast Asia believe that. Still others believe that eating dots is bad for the child. True, scented food is not the best solution for a pregnant woman but for other reasons. First of all, scented foods promote hunger and thus contribute to weight gain. Second, some spices have medical property. For example, garlic is very useful during pregnancy, but if eaten in large quantities, it can cause cervix contraction and irritability.
You can find baby gender from the shape of your belly
This is a truly popular superstition you may have heard of. In many lands, people believe that it is possible to predict a baby's sex from the shape of its belly. If the baby's leg is on the left side, the baby is a boy. And if the baby is on the right side, you'll have a daughter. Unfortunately, this is just a superstition that has nothing to do with reality. The only reliable way to determine the sex of your future child is to visit your doctor.
